QUAKE MEDIA / THE PRACTICAL GUIDE
Digital Marketing ROI: How to Measure What Matters
Digital marketing ROI is revenue from marketing minus the cost of marketing, divided by the cost of marketing, times 100. To measure it, track GA4 key events, tag every outside link with UTM parameters, choose an attribution model and judge each channel on its own timeline: PPC within weeks, SEO over 6 to 12 months.

The Simple ROI Formula
Before you evaluate any channel or agency, you need one number. The formula is straightforward:
Planning a website investment? Use our website ROI calculator to compare scenarios using your own traffic, conversion, margin and project-cost assumptions. Its estimates are planning illustrations, not forecasts or measured results.
(Revenue from Marketing - Cost of Marketing) / Cost of Marketing x 100 = ROI %
The most common mistake business owners make is measuring ROI too early. PPC campaigns can show returns within weeks. SEO takes 6 to 12 months to compound. Judging your SEO investment at the 90-day mark is like pulling a plant out of the ground to check if the roots are growing.

Channel-by-Channel ROI Benchmarks
Not every channel delivers the same return on the same timeline. This table shows what Canadian businesses should realistically expect in 2026 based on current platform costs and conversion benchmarks.
Email marketing shows the highest ROI because the audience already knows you. You are not paying for clicks or impressions. You are sending messages to people who opted in. The cost is essentially your email platform fee, which makes the return ratio enormous.
SEO delivers the best long-term value because the traffic is compounding. You pay to create and optimize content once, then it generates leads for months or years without additional spend per click. PPC stops the moment you stop paying. SEO keeps working.
The smart play for most businesses is combining channels. Run PPC for immediate leads while your SEO builds momentum. Use email to convert the leads both channels generate. This layered approach is how businesses hit that 5:1 overall benchmark consistently.

KPIs That Actually Matter (vs Vanity Metrics)
Half the dashboards agencies show their clients are filled with numbers that look impressive but tell you nothing about revenue. If your marketing report leads with pageviews and follower counts, you are looking at vanity metrics. Here is what to track instead.

How to Set Up Proper Tracking
- Mark your lead-generating actions (form submissions, phone clicks, purchases) as key events in GA4.
- Connect Google Ads to GA4 so conversion data flows between platforms automatically.
- Set up audiences in GA4 for remarketing. People who visited your pricing page but did not convert are your warmest prospects.
You cannot calculate ROI without accurate tracking. Most small businesses lose data at one of three points: their analytics setup, their campaign tagging or their attribution model. Fix all three and you will know exactly which dollars are working.
GA4 Conversion Setup
Google Analytics 4 is the foundation. If you have not configured it yet, follow our complete GA4 setup guide. The critical steps for ROI tracking:
UTM Parameters
UTM tags are the short codes you add to URLs so GA4 knows where each visitor came from. Every link you share outside your website should have UTM parameters. Use Google's free Campaign URL Builder to generate them. At minimum, tag:
- utm_source: Where the traffic comes from (google, facebook, newsletter)
- utm_medium: The channel type (cpc, email, social)
- utm_campaign: The specific campaign name (spring-promo-2026, blog-launch)
Without UTMs, GA4 lumps untagged traffic into "direct" or "unassigned." That makes your ROI calculation unreliable because you cannot attribute revenue to the campaign that earned it.
Attribution Models
A customer might click your Google Ad on Monday, read your blog on Wednesday and fill out a form on Friday. Which touchpoint gets credit for the conversion? That depends on your attribution model.
- Multi-touch (data-driven): Distributes credit across all touchpoints based on their actual influence. This is the default in GA4 and the most accurate model for most businesses.

What Good ROI Looks Like by Business Type
Benchmarks depend on your business model, your margins and your sales cycle. A SaaS company and a plumbing company should not measure ROI the same way. Here is what realistic expectations look like across common business types.

Digital marketing ROI questions answered
How long does it take to see ROI from digital marketing?
It depends on the channel. PPC and email marketing can show returns within days or weeks. SEO and content marketing typically require 6 to 12 months before delivering consistent returns. Most businesses see meaningful ROI across all channels within 6 months of a well-executed strategy.
How do I track digital marketing ROI accurately?
Set up GA4 with properly configured key events, tag all campaign URLs with UTM parameters and assign monetary values to your conversions. Use GA4's data-driven attribution model to distribute credit across touchpoints. Our GA4 setup guide walks through the full process.
Why is my digital marketing not generating ROI?
The most common causes are poor tracking (so you cannot see the ROI that exists), targeting the wrong audience, a website that does not convert traffic into leads or measuring too early before campaigns have time to mature. Start with a free audit to identify which of these applies to your business.
What is the difference between ROI and ROAS?
ROI (Return on Investment) measures overall profitability including all costs like agency fees, software and staff time. ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) only measures revenue generated per dollar of ad spend. A campaign can have strong ROAS but weak ROI if the management costs are high. Track both for a complete picture.
