How We Grew a Local Plumber’s Organic Traffic 340% in 6 Months
Local SEO strategy that turned a struggling plumbing company into the dominant search result in their service area.
We increased a Vancouver-area plumbing company’s organic traffic from 780 to 3,432 monthly sessions in six months using local SEO, Google Business Profile optimization and localized content targeting 47 service-area keywords. Monthly leads from organic search grew from 18 to 94, ranking positions improved from an average of 28.4 to 6.1 and the client’s Google Business Profile moved into the Maps Pack for 12 primary service queries.
The Challenge
A residential plumbing company in the Greater Vancouver area was generating almost zero business from organic search. Their website was a basic five-page brochure site built in 2019 with no location pages, no blog content and no schema markup. Google Search Console showed 780 monthly organic sessions with an average position of 28.4 across their target keywords.
The competitive landscape was brutal. Three well-established plumbing companies dominated the Maps Pack and top organic positions for every “[plumbing service] + [city]” query. These competitors had 200+ Google reviews, dozens of location pages and active content strategies.
The client’s Google Business Profile was claimed but neglected. It had 8 reviews (4.2-star average), no photos taken in the last two years, an incomplete services section and a business description that read like it was written in 2018. Their NAP data was inconsistent across 31 directories we audited using BrightLocal.
Monthly lead volume from organic search sat at 18. The client spent $3,200/month on Google Ads to compensate, generating leads at $87 each. They needed organic to carry the weight so they could reduce paid spend.
Our Strategy
We built a three-pillar strategy: technical foundation, local authority and content velocity. Every action mapped to a specific keyword cluster we identified through SEMrush and Google Search Console data.
Technical Foundation (Month 1)
Screaming Frog crawled the existing site and surfaced 43 issues: broken internal links, missing H1 tags on service pages, no XML sitemap, duplicate meta descriptions and zero structured data. We fixed every issue in the first two weeks.
We implemented LocalBusiness schema on every page, added BreadcrumbList markup and created a proper XML sitemap with image entries. Page speed went from 3.8 seconds LCP to 1.9 seconds after image optimization, render-blocking resource elimination and server-side caching configuration.
Google Business Profile Overhaul (Month 1)
We treated the GBP as a standalone product launch:
- Rewrote the business description with primary keywords within the 750-character limit
- Added 55 photos: completed jobs, team members, service vehicles and before/after project shots
- Configured all service categories and subcategories with detailed descriptions
- Set accurate service areas for 14 municipalities
- Published weekly Google Posts highlighting recent projects and seasonal plumbing tips
- Enabled messaging, booking and the Q&A section with pre-populated answers
Location Page Buildout (Months 1-2)
We created 14 dedicated location pages targeting each municipality in the service area. Each page included unique content about the area’s housing stock, common plumbing issues specific to that neighborhood and relevant testimonials. This wasn’t the copy-paste-swap-city-name approach. Each page had genuinely different content because plumbing issues in 1960s Vancouver ranchers are different from 2015 Surrey townhomes.
Service Page Expansion (Month 2)
The original site had one generic “Services” page. We expanded this into 8 dedicated service pages: drain cleaning, water heater installation, pipe repair, bathroom renovation plumbing, emergency plumbing, sewer line repair, fixture installation and water filtration. Each page targeted a specific keyword cluster and included pricing ranges, process explanations and relevant FAQ schema.
Content Strategy (Months 2-6)
We published two blog posts per week targeting informational queries with local intent: “how to prevent frozen pipes in Burnaby,” “water heater replacement cost Vancouver 2026” and similar. Each post internally linked to the relevant service page and location page, building topical authority clusters.
Review Acceleration (Months 1-6)
We implemented an automated post-service review request sequence using email and SMS. The plumber’s technicians were trained to mention the review link at job completion. Review count grew from 8 to 67 with a 4.9-star average over six months.
Citation Building and NAP Cleanup
We corrected NAP data across all 31 existing directories and built new citations on 45 additional platforms including Canadian-specific directories, plumbing industry directories and local business associations. Every listing used identical formatting down to the abbreviation style in the address.

Key Takeaway
Local SEO for service businesses isn’t one tactic. It’s the intersection of technical SEO, GBP optimization, content strategy and review management working together. This client’s 340% traffic growth came from executing all four simultaneously. The GBP overhaul delivered the fastest wins (Maps Pack visibility by month 2), while the content strategy compounded over months 3-6 as location pages and blog posts earned topical authority.
The most important number isn’t the traffic. It’s the $25,200 in annual Google Ads savings. Organic search replaced paid as the primary lead channel, making the client’s marketing spend sustainable long-term. Our SEO packages are built to deliver exactly this kind of ROI transition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does local SEO cost for a plumbing company?
Local SEO investment for plumbing companies typically ranges from $1,500 to $3,500 per month depending on the number of service areas, competition level and starting point. This client’s engagement included GBP optimization, 14 location pages, weekly content, citation building and review management. How long before a plumber sees results from local SEO?
GBP optimizations typically show Maps Pack movement within 30-60 days. Location pages begin ranking within 60-90 days for lower-competition queries. Full results compound between months 4 and 6 as citation signals strengthen and content builds topical authority. This client saw first Maps Pack appearances at month 2 and peak performance at month 6.
Can local SEO replace Google Ads for plumbing companies?
In most cases, local SEO can significantly reduce Google Ads dependency but shouldn’t fully replace it. This client cut ad spend by 66% while increasing total lead volume. We recommend maintaining a small Ads budget for emergency service keywords where organic rankings fluctuate seasonally. The combination of organic visibility and targeted PPC campaigns delivers the most reliable lead flow.
